Watup to all readers, fans, and friends. Yesterday I had a major discussion with a couple artists, bloggers, and hip-hop fans about what they look for in a musician. I was unpleasantly surprised by nearly everyone's views on the subject.
I've realized that the public has lost sight and has begun focusing more on image even in the underground. I thought all that began when you hit mainstream, but clearly not. An artist I worked with and used to seek artistic guidance from said it himself - "Image first, Music second". Well, I can't do that, so clearly I'm not a fit-in for what "the people" really want.
I'm not a marketing genius and I don't have the time or money to do photoshoots and graphics. I have to study, work, and save up for tuition and other future plans. This isn't what I started making music for; I made it because it was music. Plain and simple. This was never a career choice, although I can't say I don't think about it every now and then.
Does that mean I'm going to stop making music? Hell no. This runs in my veins, and that's not a figure of speech. Music has been there with me since the start. I remember back when I was like 4, forcing my parents to play music the second we got in the car every time we were going somewhere. It was even there for me when I had no one to turn to. So why would I turn my back on it?
I thought about this for a while last night. Thinking about if it's worth my efforts to even make any music anymore. I talked to someone I always turn to and they told me that if I love music, just make it for me and the people that love what I do even if it's a small audience.
That's what I'm going to do. I started this as a hobby and I'm going to enjoy it, whether the public likes who I am or not. That's why I started this blog. It's because I love hearing, making, and sharing music. It's a universal language. A mixture of different sounds and emotions that can be as simple or complex as you like. It's a symbolic representation of everything around us.
So this is it. Music first, music second, music last. Period. Whoever is with me on this, props. The rest, keep doing your thing and I wish you the best.
